New Delhi : Air India has appointed former Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tewolde Gebremariam as its new CEO and Managing Director. This appointment comes at a time when Air India is facing significant losses, regulatory scrutiny, and multiple operational challenges. Tewolde Gebremariam will now be responsible for the airline’s strategy, expansion, and performance improvement.
Tewolde Gebremariam will replace Campbell Wilson, who announced his resignation earlier this week. Wilson had been leading Air India since 2022. His five-year term was scheduled to end in July 2027. However, in 2024, he informed Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran about his plan to step down in 2026 and agreed to remain in the role until a successor was appointed.
The new CEO is taking charge at a time when Air India is facing several challenges. Regulatory scrutiny of the airline has increased following the 2025 aircraft accident. This incident has drawn greater attention to the airline’s operations. Air India continues to face ongoing financial losses.
Operational issues add pressure…
Along with regulatory challenges, the airline has also been affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This situation has increased operating costs and impacted flights. Additionally, the closure of Pakistan’s airspace has further added to Air India’s operational difficulties.
