Gunfire Near Pakistan Army GHQ in Rawalpindi; One Soldier Killed
Rawalpindi, August 12, 2026: A security scare was reported outside the main gate of the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi after an armed attacker allegedly opened fire at an entry checkpoint on Tuesday morning.
According to a report , the attacker reportedly arrived near the GHQ entrance during a busy period and suddenly opened fire on security personnel. Guards immediately retaliated and engaged the attacker.
One Pakistan Army soldier was killed in the exchange of fire, while two other security personnel were reportedly seriously injured and shifted to a military hospital for treatment.
Security forces subsequently neutralised the attacker before he could enter the highly secured GHQ complex. Authorities are reportedly investigating whether the attacker intended to carry out a larger suicide attack, with possible explosive material suspected to have been involved.
Following the incident, security was intensified across the GHQ area and surrounding parts of the Rawalpindi cantonment. Counter-terrorism personnel, special forces and regular military units reportedly launched search operations, while additional checkpoints were established and movement in the area was placed under tighter control.
The incident has raised fresh security concerns around one of Pakistan’s most sensitive military installations. Further details about the identity and possible affiliations of the attacker are awaited.
