New Delhi, August 15: Every year, August 15 is celebrated across India as Independence Day. But have you ever wondered why August 15 was chosen as the date when India would finally become free from British rule?

India achieved independence on August 15, 1947, bringing an end to nearly two centuries of British colonial rule. The historic transfer of power came after decades of struggle, sacrifice and mass movements led by freedom fighters and ordinary citizens across the country.

Why August 15?

The choice of August 15 was closely associated with Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India. The process of transferring power had originally been expected to take place at a later date, but Mountbatten brought the date forward to August 15, 1947.

One important historical connection to the date was the surrender of Japan on August 15, 1945, which marked the end of World War II. Mountbatten, who had served as Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia, was closely associated with Japan’s surrender. The date therefore held particular significance for him.

The Indian Independence Act was passed by the British Parliament in July 1947, providing the legal framework for the creation of the independent Dominions of India and Pakistan. Independence came into effect at midnight between August 14 and August 15, 1947.

A Historic Midnight

On the night of August 14, 1947, India’s Constituent Assembly met in New Delhi. At the stroke of midnight, India formally entered a new era as an independent nation.

Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his historic “Tryst with Destiny” speech, marking the beginning of independent India’s journey. The country officially celebrated its first Independence Day on August 15, 1947.

August 15 Becomes a Symbol of Freedom

Since then, August 15 has remained one of India’s most important national days. The occasion is observed with flag-hoisting ceremonies, patriotic programmes and tributes to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s freedom.

The date is not merely a reminder of the end of British rule. It also represents the beginning of India’s journey as a sovereign nation and its continuing commitment to democracy, development and national unity.

As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day in 2026, August 15 continues to remind every citizen of the courage and sacrifice that made freedom possible.
