Gangadhar Meher University Honours Ramesh Prasad Swain, for Contribution to Heritage Conservation

Sambalpur: Gangadhar Meher University has honoured Ramesh Prasad Swain, a resident of Ghosaramal village under Naktideul Block in the Redhakhol subdivision, in recognition of his dedicated contribution to research, preservation and documentation of the region’s history, culture, heritage and archaeology.

Swain was felicitated with a citation and traditional uttariya at the seminar hall of Gangadhar Meher University on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary celebration of historian Shiv Prasad Das.

The recognition acknowledged Swain’s sustained and selfless efforts towards the exploration, conservation, promotion and documentation of the rich historical and cultural heritage of the region. His work has helped bring several lesser-known heritage resources into public attention and encouraged greater awareness about their historical significance.

Contribution to Bhimmandali Rock Art Site

Swain’s contribution to the Bhimmandali rock art site received special recognition. Through his local knowledge, continuous support, guidance and cooperation, he has played an important role in facilitating research, field studies, workshops and heritage-related academic activities at the site.

His assistance has reportedly been particularly valuable to students and scholars of the Department of History, Gangadhar Meher University, especially during their research and workshops related to Bhimmandali.

By providing local support and facilitating access and field-level activities, Swain has helped young researchers engage with and understand the archaeological and cultural resources of the region.

Support for Archaeological Research at Puranagad

Swain has also extended support and cooperation to archaeological research and excavation activities at Puranagad in Redhakhol. His involvement and local assistance have contributed to efforts aimed at advancing historical and archaeological research in the area.

The university’s recognition is therefore seen as an appreciation of the role played by local individuals in supporting academic research and preserving the region’s cultural heritage.

National Seminar Held in Sambalpur

The felicitation took place during a programme organised in Sambalpur to mark the 125th birth anniversary of historian Shiv Prasad Das, along with a national seminar on cultural development.

Among those present on the dais were Northern Revenue Divisional Commissioner Dr. Byomakesh Tripathy, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Atul Kumar Pradhan, Professor of History, and Deepak Panda, who delivered the keynote address.

A number of intellectuals, researchers, students and other distinguished personalities from the region also attended the programme.

The event highlighted the importance of preserving Odisha’s historical and archaeological heritage while encouraging research, documentation and academic engagement with the region’s rich cultural past.
