Illegal Sand Mining Allegations in Naktideul: Unregulated Extraction Threatens Tikira Riverbank
SAMBALPUR : Allegations of large-scale illegal sand extraction and transportation from the Tikira River in Naktideul tehsil of Sambalpur district have raised concerns over the river’s ecological condition, loss of agricultural land and revenue to the state government.
According to a report sand has allegedly been extracted and transported illegally from the Tikira River for several years. Local residents have alleged that the activity has intensified in recent times, with heavy machinery being used at several locations along the river.
The report also highlights concerns over the absence of a valid sand quarry lease in the area. Residents have alleged that unauthorised sand lifting is affecting the natural flow of the river, weakening its banks and damaging vegetation along the riverbed.
Riverbank erosion and falling water levels
Unregulated sand extraction is reportedly contributing to riverbank erosion and a decline in water levels. Agricultural land located along the riverbank is also said to be facing difficulties, while farmers are reportedly concerned about cultivation due to changes in the local water situation.
The report further states that drying water sources have affected traditional livelihoods, including fishing. Local residents have reportedly demanded measures such as construction of check dams in the upper reaches of the river and stone pitching along vulnerable stretches of the riverbank.
Allegations of selective enforcement
Residents have also raised allegations of unequal enforcement against illegal sand transportation. Claims have been made that while some vehicles carrying sand for private construction purposes face police action, other alleged illegal transportation activities continue.
The report mentions an incident in which two tractors carrying sand were reportedly seized, with the drivers sent to jail following police action. The incident has reportedly intensified local discussion over illegal mineral extraction and enforcement.
However, allegations regarding the involvement of local sand operators, political figures or government officials remain claims made by local residents and have not been independently established.
Administration says action is being taken
According to the report, Naktideul Tahasildar said that preventing illegal transportation of sand from unauthorised locations and sensitive areas is the responsibility of the Mines Department. He reportedly stated that information regarding illegal sand transportation would be communicated to the concerned department.
The Tahasildar also indicated that a process for granting a sand quarry lease has been initiated. The report further mentions that officials conducted a surprise raid recently and seized a tractor in connection with alleged illegal sand extraction.
The controversy has once again brought attention to the need for effective regulation of minor mineral extraction, protection of river ecosystems and transparent enforcement of sand-mining rules in the Naktideul region.
