Islamabad: Serious concerns have once again been raised over the health and safety of former Pakistan Prime Minister and cricketer Imran Khan, with his sons warning that his condition may deteriorate further if he does not receive proper medical care while in prison.

Imran Khan, 73, has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since August 2023. His sons, Sulaiman Khan and Kasim Khan, have expressed deep concern over their father’s health and the conditions under which he is being held. They have alleged that access to their father has been severely restricted and that the family has struggled to obtain reliable information about his condition.

Sons Raise Alarm Over Imran Khan’s Health

Speaking publicly about their father’s condition, Imran Khan’s sons said they fear that his prolonged imprisonment and reported restrictions on medical and family access could pose a serious risk to his health.

Kasim Khan reportedly warned that his 73-year-old father’s body is suffering because of the conditions of his imprisonment. The brothers have also said that they have been unable to meet him and have lacked regular updates from family members, doctors and lawyers.

The allegations have intensified the debate over Imran Khan’s treatment in prison, with his supporters demanding independent medical care and greater access for his family and legal representatives.

Supreme Court Orders Medical Treatment

The controversy escalated after Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered authorities to move Imran Khan from jail to a private hospital for medical treatment. The court’s intervention came amid growing concerns raised by his family and political party over his health.

However, Khan was subsequently taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), a government-run hospital, for a brief medical examination before being returned to Adiala Jail. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), alleged that the authorities had failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s directions and said it would pursue contempt proceedings.

Dispute Over Medical Condition

The health controversy has also involved conflicting claims. Khan’s family and supporters have raised concerns about his eyesight and other health problems, while Pakistani authorities have rejected allegations of medical neglect, mistreatment and solitary confinement.

The government has said that Khan has undergone repeated medical examinations and that doctors have not found an immediate serious health threat. Officials have also cited security concerns for decisions regarding his hospital transfer.

International Cricket Community Voices Concern

The issue has attracted attention beyond Pakistan’s political circles. Former international cricket captains, including India’s Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar, have renewed appeals to Pakistan’s leadership for appropriate medical treatment and humane conditions for Imran Khan.

The former Pakistan captain led his country to its historic 1992 Cricket World Cup victory before entering politics and serving as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
