Wild Tusker Enters Champua Town in Keonjhar, Panic Among Residents

Champua, Keonjhar, August 23, 2026: Panic gripped Champua town in Keonjhar district after a lone tusker entered the town during the night, creating fear among residents.

According to reports, the elephant entered Champua from the Jharkhand side around dusk and was later spotted moving through different parts of the town. The presence of the wild elephant in a populated urban area caused concern among local residents.

Forest Department Launches Elephant-Diverting Operation

After receiving information about the elephant’s movement, forest department personnel and the Champua Range Officer began monitoring the tusker closely. Officials focused on protecting residents and preventing any confrontation between the elephant and people.

The forest personnel managed to drive the elephant away from the main Champua market area and guide it towards a comparatively safer location.

Tusker Moves Towards Baitarani River

The elephant reportedly passed through Champua market, Ward No. 6 and the Muslim settlement, before moving towards Ward No. 1. It subsequently headed towards a mango orchard located near the Baitarani River.

Fortunately, no loss of life or property damage was reported during the incident.

Repeated Elephant Movement Raises Concern

Although the latest incident did not result in any reported damage, repeated elephant incursions into populated areas have become a growing concern for residents.

People in Champua have expressed fear over the possibility of elephants entering the town again, particularly at night. Residents are urging the forest department to maintain close surveillance and take preventive measures to avoid human-elephant conflict.

Forest officials are continuing to monitor the tusker’s movements to ensure the safety of both local residents and the animal.
