21 Former Cricket Captains, Including Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, Appeal for Medical Care for Imran Khan
New Delhi/Islamabad, August 24, 2026: Twenty-one former international cricket captains, including Indian cricket legends Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar, have renewed their appeal to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging authorities to ensure proper medical treatment and humane care for jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister and World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan.
The appeal was initiated by former Australia captain Greg Chappell and marks the second joint letter from former international captains concerning Khan’s health and welfare. The latest letter was issued amid concerns over the 73-year-old former cricketer’s reported health problems, including an alleged loss of vision in his right eye.
Demand Independent Medical Assessment
The former captains have urged the Pakistan government to allow the medical board directed by the country’s Supreme Court to conduct an independent assessment of Khan’s health. They have specifically called for the inclusion of his personal doctors in the medical process.
The group has also asked Pakistani authorities to provide any treatment recommended following the medical assessment without delay.
Call for Weekly Family Visits
The former cricketers also urged the Pakistan government to ensure uninterrupted weekly visits by Khan’s family, saying that such visits had been directed by the Supreme Court.
The signatories stressed that their intervention was not intended to interfere in Pakistan’s domestic legal or political affairs. Instead, they said their appeal was based on their shared connection with Imran Khan as fellow cricketers and international sporting rivals.
The letter comes after Khan was reportedly transferred from prison for medical examination before being returned to Adiala Jail. His health has remained a subject of concern among his family, supporters and international figures.
Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and the other former captains have called on Pakistan’s leadership to ensure that Imran Khan receives appropriate medical attention and that court-directed procedures concerning his health and family access are followed.
The appeal has once again brought international attention to the welfare of the former Pakistan cricket captain, who led Pakistan to its historic 1992 Cricket World Cup victory before entering politics and later serving as the country’s Prime Minister.
