Mystery Deepens Over MV Ocean Winner’s Sinking Near Andaman; Search Operation Continues
Paradip/Jagatsinghpur, August 24, 2026: The mystery surrounding the disappearance and suspected sinking of the MV Ocean Winner, a cargo vessel carrying iron ore from Paradip to China, has deepened as search teams have yet to locate the ship more than 40 hours after it went missing in the deep sea near the Andaman Islands.
The vessel had departed from Paradip Port on the night of August 20, carrying around 72,100 metric tonnes of iron ore bound for China. After travelling approximately 240 nautical miles, or around 444 km, the vessel reportedly disappeared in the deep waters near the Andaman region.
Coast Guard and Navy Conduct Extensive Search
The Indian Coast Guard has deployed three ships, while the Indian Navy has also deployed aircraft to locate the missing vessel and rescue its crew. Despite the continuing operation, authorities have so far been unable to establish the exact location of the ship.
The disappearance has raised serious questions because the vessel was equipped with modern communication and emergency systems. Under normal circumstances, a ship facing a serious emergency is expected to transmit a Mayday distress call through VHF or satellite communication, while its location can also be communicated to the relevant authorities and company.
However, it remains unclear whether any emergency message or location information from the Ocean Winner reached the shipping company, authorities or Panama, the vessel’s flag state, before the ship disappeared.
Technical Failure, Accident or Other Cause?
The exact reason behind the vessel’s disappearance remains unknown. Several possibilities are being examined, including a technical failure, an accident, adverse sea conditions or problems related to the vessel’s cargo and loading condition.
Experts have suggested that a sudden loss of signal could have been caused by a technical problem. Another possibility is that the vessel encountered adverse conditions that it could not withstand. The possibility of the vessel becoming dangerously heavy because of excessive water accumulation associated with the transportation of iron ore is also being discussed.
However, officials have not yet established any specific cause, and the circumstances surrounding the incident will become clearer only after the vessel is located and a detailed investigation is conducted.
27-Year-Old Vessel
According to the report, the Ocean Winner was built in 1998. The vessel was approximately 225 metres long and 32 metres wide, with a carrying capacity of about 73,736 metric tonnes.
Before arriving at Paradip, the vessel had reportedly reached Ruwais Port in Abu Dhabi on August 15, carrying around 70,000 metric tonnes of sulphur. It subsequently arrived in Paradip, where it was loaded with approximately 72,100 metric tonnes of iron ore before beginning its voyage towards China on August 20.
Survivors’ Statements May Hold Key Clues
The investigation is expected to be a lengthy process. Authorities are likely to examine the vessel’s movements from its previous port of origin through its arrival at Paradip, the loading of iron ore, its departure and the circumstances immediately preceding its disappearance.
Investigators are also expected to examine satellite data and determine whether any distress signals or emergency information were transmitted before the vessel vanished.
The statements of the two people who were rescued could prove particularly important in establishing what happened aboard the vessel before it disappeared.
Search Operation Remains the Priority
For now, locating the Ocean Winner remains the primary challenge for the Coast Guard and Navy. Once the vessel is found, investigators are expected to examine its condition, cargo loading, communication systems, navigation records and other available evidence to determine the actual cause of the incident.
The disappearance of a large cargo ship carrying more than 72,000 tonnes of iron ore, despite being equipped with modern communication systems, has raised significant questions. Until the vessel is located and the circumstances are thoroughly investigated, the mystery surrounding the MV Ocean Winner is likely to remain unresolved.
