Balasore, September 8, 2026: Mystery surrounds the sighting of five unidentified animals in the Bichitrapur forest area of Bhograi block in Odisha’s Balasore district, with reports suggesting that the animals could be orangutans.

The unusual sighting has created excitement and concern among local residents. Following information about the animals, Forest Department officials reached the spot and initiated an investigation to identify the species.

According to the report, the five animals were subsequently rescued and taken to the Udayapur Forest Range office for health examination. Officials are examining their physical characteristics and other evidence to determine whether they are actually orangutans or belong to another species.

How Did the Animals Reach Balasore?

The presence of five such unusual animals in a rural forest has raised several questions. Orangutans are not native to the forests of Odisha, making the reported sighting particularly unusual.

Authorities are now trying to determine where the animals came from and how they reached Bichitrapur forest. If they are confirmed to be orangutans, officials will also have to investigate how five animals arrived in the area together.

A separate report said the rescued animals were taken for medical examination and that forest authorities were investigating their origin and making arrangements for their safe custody.

Forest Department Investigation Underway

The Forest Department is expected to conduct a detailed examination before making a final determination about the animals’ species and origin.

Until the identification process is completed, officials have not conclusively established that the animals are orangutans. The unusual incident has nevertheless triggered considerable curiosity in Balasore’s Bhograi area.
