Mystery Deepens Over Pigeon Found With Bangladesh-Linked Codes in Mayurbhanj
Mayurbhanj, Odisha | September 15, 2026: A pigeon carrying a metal ring inscribed with the codes “BAN-2024” and “701831” has been found at Kashipada village under the Baisinga police station area of Betanati block in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, prompting police to begin an inquiry into its origin.
The unusual bird was reportedly spotted near the house of Harish Chandra Puhan in Kashipada on Tuesday afternoon. Family members noticed a blue-coloured metal ring fitted around one of the pigeon’s legs. On closer examination, the markings “BAN-2024” and “701831” were found clearly engraved on the ring.
Suspecting that the “BAN” marking could have a connection with Bangladesh, the family informed the Baisinga police. Harish Chandra Puhan’s son, Srikash Puhan, subsequently took the pigeon to the police station.
Following the information, Betanati SDPO Minati Biswal and Baisinga police station officer-in-charge Babashankar Saraf reportedly examined the markings on the ring and began checking the codes.
The presence of “BAN-2024” has led to a preliminary suspicion that the pigeon could have originated in Bangladesh and may have been released or tagged in 2024. However, the significance of the number 701831 remains unclear.
Police are investigating where the pigeon came from, why the ring was attached to its leg and whether the markings have any specific significance. There is currently no confirmation that the pigeon was being used for espionage or any illegal activity.
The discovery has generated considerable curiosity and concern among residents of the area, with many people gathering to see the unusual bird. The focus now remains on the police investigation, which is expected to establish the pigeon’s origin and the purpose of the markings.
The incident comes at a time when Mayurbhanj, the district associated with President Droupadi Murmu, has received increased attention at both the state and national levels.
