Woman Killed in Crocodile Attack in Kendrapara
KENDRAPARA, ODISHA: A 56-year-old woman was killed in a suspected crocodile attack in Kharinasi village under Mahakalapada block of Kendrapara district on Tuesday morning, triggering grief and concern among local residents.
The deceased has been identified as Hemalata Das, also known as Bindu, wife of the late Samar Das and a resident of Kharinasi village.
According to reports, Hemalata had gone towards agricultural land near the village at around 8 am. She is believed to have gone to the Galia River, a distributary of the Mahanadi, when a crocodile reportedly attacked her and dragged her into deeper water.
On hearing about the incident, local residents launched a search operation and managed to rescue her. She was initially taken to the Ramnagar health centre and was subsequently shifted to Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
However, doctors at the district hospital declared her dead.
Reports indicate that the crocodile had bitten her left leg below the knee. The incident has left residents of Kharinasi and surrounding areas deeply shocked.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the continuing risk posed by crocodile attacks in riverine areas of Kendrapara, particularly in locations close to water bodies and crocodile habitats. Authorities and local residents are likely to face renewed concerns over safety near rivers and creeks.
