Ranchi, August 13: Jharkhand Police have registered criminal cases against nearly 600 students and job aspirants following the recent “Vidhan Sabha Gherao” protest in Ranchi, where demonstrators marched towards the State Assembly over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations.

According to police, the FIR names around 300 identified protesters and 300 unidentified persons. Authorities alleged that some protesters breached security barricades, disrupted public order, and clashed with police during the march. Investigators said video footage from the protest is being examined to identify those involved in acts of violence and damage to public property.

The protest was organised by students demanding the cancellation of recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), alleging paper leaks and other irregularities. Protesters also sought a CBI inquiry into the recruitment process.

The demonstration turned violent after thousands of protesters attempted to move towards the Assembly despite heavy security arrangements. Police used tear gas, water cannons, and batons to disperse the crowd after clashes broke out. Several protesters and police personnel reportedly sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The protests have triggered a political controversy, with opposition leaders criticising the police action and demanding justice for the students. Meanwhile, the Jharkhand government has maintained that it remains open to dialogue while insisting that those responsible for violence and damage to public property will face legal action.
