Islamabad, August 19, 2026: Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered authorities to transfer former Prime Minister Imran Khan from prison to a private hospital in Islamabad amid growing concerns over his deteriorating health.

The court has directed that Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours for medical examination and treatment. He is expected to remain there until September 16 under the supervision of a medical panel comprising specialists and his personal physician.

The decision follows repeated concerns raised by Khan’s family and legal team regarding his health, particularly problems affecting his eyesight. His lawyers had sought better medical facilities and access to specialist doctors.

The Supreme Court has also allowed weekly family visits and phone calls with his sons, according to reports.

Khan, 73, has been imprisoned since 2023 following his conviction in corruption-related cases. His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision.

However, the government has expressed reservations over the order. While one government minister indicated that authorities would comply, the Law Minister reportedly questioned whether similar privileges should be extended to other prisoners with health problems and indicated that the government could seek modification of the order.

The former prime minister’s health has remained a politically sensitive issue, with his family and supporters repeatedly demanding access to independent medical specialists and appropriate treatment.

The Supreme Court’s latest order is expected to provide Khan with specialised medical care while keeping his custody arrangements under judicial oversight.
