Sambalpur, : The Central Government has imposed a ban on the use of Paraquat, a highly toxic herbicide, citing concerns over its serious risks to human health, agriculture and the environment.

Paraquat is a widely used weed-killing chemical. However, concerns have been raised over its toxicity and the risks associated with exposure among farmers, agricultural workers and others handling the chemical.

According to the report, the government’s decision follows concerns raised over the harmful effects of Paraquat and its potential impact on human health. The chemical has also been linked to serious poisoning incidents, particularly when it is accidentally or deliberately ingested.

The move comes after sustained demands for stronger restrictions on the use of Paraquat. Agricultural and environmental concerns have also contributed to the growing debate over the continued availability of the herbicide.

The authorities had earlier examined the issue and considered measures to regulate the chemical. The latest decision now places Paraquat under a complete prohibition.

Experts have repeatedly advised farmers and agricultural workers to exercise extreme caution while handling chemical pesticides and herbicides, as improper exposure can pose serious health risks.

The government’s decision is expected to have an impact on the availability and use of Paraquat-based weed-control products in the agricultural sector. Farmers may now have to depend on safer alternatives for controlling weeds.

The ban has been described as an important step towards reducing exposure to highly toxic agricultural chemicals and protecting the health of farmers, agricultural workers and the wider environment.
