Bonai, Sundargarh: Laxman Munda is a prominent tribal political leader from Odisha and a senior member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Representing the Bonai Assembly constituency in Sundargarh district, Munda has built a long political career around issues concerning tribal communities, workers, land, forests and local development.

Born on July 18, 1963, Laxman Munda belongs to the Munda tribal community. He completed his intermediate education at Bonaigarh College and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 from the same institution, affiliated with Sambalpur University. Official records of the Odisha Legislative Assembly currently list him as the CPI(M) MLA from Bonai.

Entry into Public Life

Munda’s political journey began at the grassroots level. According to a constituency-development profile, he entered public life through local governance and trade-union activities. He served as a Sarpanch of Gopana Gram Panchayat in 1992 and was associated with the Central Industrial Trade Union (CITU). His political activities developed in an area where mining, industrialisation, agriculture and tribal livelihoods have long been major public issues.

His association with workers’ organisations and the communist movement helped shape his political career. Bonai, a Scheduled Tribe-reserved constituency, includes areas such as Bonaigarh, Gurundia, Lahunipada and Koida, where mining and natural-resource-related issues have been important subjects of public debate.

Four-Time MLA

Laxman Munda first entered the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2004, when he won the Bonai seat as a CPI(M) candidate. He subsequently lost the constituency in the 2009 election but returned to the Assembly in 2014.

He retained the Bonai seat in the 2019 Odisha Assembly election and again won in the 2024 Assembly election, making him a four-time MLA from Bonai. In the 2024 election, Munda secured 81,008 votes, according to election-affidavit and election-result records.

The Odisha Legislative Assembly’s current records identify him as the CPI(M)’s representative from Bonai in the 17th Legislative Assembly.

Focus on Tribal and Working-Class Issues

Throughout his political career, Munda has been associated with issues affecting tribal and working-class communities. His public profile has particularly highlighted concerns relating to land, water and forests, as well as the impact of mining and industrial activity on local communities.

Bonai’s economy and social landscape have been significantly influenced by agriculture, mining and industrial activity. Against this background, Munda’s political work has largely developed around questions of livelihoods, workers’ interests, tribal rights and local development.

Legislative Role

As an MLA, Munda has continued to represent Bonai in the Odisha Legislative Assembly. Data compiled by PRS Legislative Research records him as an elected CPI(M) member from Bonai and identifies his educational qualification as graduation.

His continued presence in the Assembly is notable because CPI(M) has maintained a relatively limited electoral presence in Odisha, while Munda has repeatedly retained the Bonai constituency across multiple election cycles.

A Long Political Journey

From grassroots politics and trade-union activities to becoming a four-time legislator, Laxman Munda’s political career spans more than three decades. His journey reflects the distinctive political character of Bonai, a tribal-dominated constituency where questions of natural resources, industrialisation, workers’ rights and community interests remain important.

Today, Munda continues to serve as the CPI(M) MLA from Bonai, representing the constituency in the Odisha Legislative Assembly and remaining one of the state’s longest-serving tribal political leaders.
